  14. KODAK Photo CD System CD ROM Drive Compatibility Guidelines
  15.  
  16. The introduction of the KODAK Photo CD system has been 
  17. enthusiastically greeted by computer users who are eager to use 
  18. high-quality photographic images on their desktop.  However, the 
  19. Photo CD system represents the first widely adopted use of 
  20. multisession CD ROM technology.  And because it is so new, there has 
  21. been some confusion about the CD ROM drives, related components, 
  22. and software required to incorporate Photo CD technology into the 
  23. desktop environment.  This guide is intended to help clear up some 
  24. of the confusion.  
  25.  
  26. Eastman Kodak Company has tested all of the drives, related 
  27. components, and device driver software listed in this guide for 
  28. compatibility with the KODAK Photo CD format.  Each one of the 
  29. drives herein has at least limited compatibility with the Photo CD 
  30. format when they are used with the appropriate components and 
  31. software and when they are part of one of the configurations 
  32. described below.  There is, however, no guarantee that the drives 
  33. listed will work properly with the customer's computer 
  34. configuration.  The correct operation of the CD ROM drives and 
  35. controllers with the customer's computer will depend on the correct 
  36. version of device driver software and compatible computer 
  37. peripheral hardware.  Substituting different drives, components, and 
  38. software may cause incompatibility.  Customers should contact the CD 
  39. ROM drive vendor with technical assistance questions.

  65. Reading Photo CD Images
  66. In order to access Photo CD images on a computer, users need the 
  67. following compatible components:
  68.  
  69. *    a CD ROM drive capable of reading Mode 2 Form 1 data (Photo 
  70.     CD image data is recorded in a CD ROM format known as Mode 
  71.     2 Form 1.)
  72. *    a CD ROM controller (also known as a host adaptor or controller 
  73.     board)
  74. *    a cable to connect the drive to the controller
  75. *    device driver software (low-level device driver and foreign file 
  76.     system driver) capable of reading Mode 2 Form 1 data
  77.  
  78. Together, these four components form a Photo CD-compatible CD ROM 
  79. drive subsystem.  Each component of the subsystem must be capable 
  80. of supporting the Photo CD format.  It is essential that customers 
  81. contact the drive manufacturers (see page 10) for specific 
  82. information on the Photo CD compatibility of their CD ROM drive 
  83. subsystem before purchasing those items.  Customers can also call 
  84. the Kodak Information Center (1-800-242-2424, ext. 53) for current 
  85. drive compatibility information.

  87. In addition to the hardware and driver software listed above, 
  88. customers also need application software capable of accessing Photo 
  89. CD images.  Kodak offers a family of Photo CD-enabled software 
  90. packages that can access, store, import, and enhance Photo CD images 
  91. and high-quality digital images in other popular file formats.

  93. the KODAK Photo CD software offerings.

  95. Single Session Drives
  96. There are Photo CD-compatible CD ROM drive subsystems available 
  97. today which can access images written to a compact disc during a 
  98. single recording session.  These drives are known as single session 
  99. drives.  The single session CD ROM drive subsystems offer limited 
  100. capability in reading Photo CD discs.  Specifically, the single session 
  101. CD ROM drive subsystems will read Photo CD images recorded onto a 
  102. Photo CD disc in ONE session.  These drives will not recognize data 
  103. appended (i.e., added) to a disc after the initial recording session, 
  104. however.  A single session drive is suitable for anyone who wants to 
  105. begin working with Photo CD images immediately and is able to limit 
  106. data recording to one session per disc.

  108. Multisession Drives
  109. The Photo CD system offers the considerable advantage of allowing 
  110. images to be appended to a disc in multiple recording sessions.  Users 
  111. who want to take advantage of that capability will need multisession 
  112. drives to read the data appended to discs in subsequent recording 
  113. sessions.  The drives listed in the multisession area have been 
  114. determined to be fully capable of playing multisession Photo CD 
  115. discs.  Look for the Photo CD logo (displayed below) on drives that 
  116. have passed Kodak's testing and are licensed in our Photo CD 
  117. branding program.  Call 1-800-242-2424, ext. 53 to learn more about 
  118. the branding program for multisession drives.
